Ben couldn’t believe they were going out on a date.
They had headed out to order a pizza and took it to the drive-in movie theater. They watched a double feature while sitting in the open tailgate of Nick’s Jeep. They slowly killed off the pizza and moved closer together to sit in the back of the Jeep. Nick intertwined his fingers with Ben’s as they sat with the long length of their thighs pressed together.
He liked this.
Ben let his head fall against the back of the seat, letting his head lean on Nick’s broad shoulder. He didn’t push him away. Ben let his eyes go dreamy as he imagined what life could be like if they were together as a family. Would they have kids? Did Nick even want them? Would they have long lazy summers like this?
Ben wasn’t sure how he could run a farm and raise a family. They’d need a nanny. Nick tilted up Ben’s chin, brushing his thumb over his parted lips. He wanted Nick to kiss him, but he knew they couldn’t risk a stolen kiss in such a public place. What would happen if someone saw them? Eagle Pass wasn’t anything like New York City. This small town was still fifty years behind the times.
“I love how soft your lips are and how rough your hands are against mine.”
Nick’s confession sent a zing of pleasure rippling through his body. Maybe, just maybe they could be together for the long run.
“Kiss me.”
Nick smiled. “Not here, babe.”
There was an hour left of the movie. Ben longed to be someplace more private where they could explore the feelings that they were between them.
“Let’s get out of here,” Nick said. “I have to get to work. I’ve been goofing off too much lately.”
They packed up and Nick drove back to the ranch. After he shut off the Jeep, Ben lingered in the car. Nick reached for him and gave him a punishing kiss that stole his breath away. Ben’s tongue fought against Nick’s, wanting so much more. They were both breathing hard as they pulled away.
“You’re not making this easy on me,” Nick said. “I’ll be back around midnight, okay?”
“I’ll be waiting for you.”
It took all of Ben’s willpower to walk away from Nick. Ben got out of the Jeep and headed toward the porch. As he closed the front door, Ben watched Nick as he pulled his Jeep toward the stable and parked it. Ben wanted to spend all night following Nick around like a little lost puppy dog. He shook his head as he unlocked the front door.
Ben shut the front door and slumped against it. Nick made him feel weak and strong at the same time. How was that even possible? He headed down the hallway toward the kitchen. It was then that he saw the black duffle bag sitting on his kitchen table. Ben went over to it and pulled it toward him. It was heavy. He unzipped the bag and opened it up.
